aquaMORPH & art[LAB]: Unveiling the Power of Parametric Art Installations to Transform Spaces

In a world where spaces are increasingly curated to tell stories, art installations have evolved from mere decorative expressions to immersive, transformative experiences. They don't just adorn a space — they define it, activate it, and elevate its essence. At the heart of this spatial evolution lies art[LAB], a parametric art studio dedicated to crafting sculptural installations that merge algorithmic design with the precision of digital fabrication and the soul of artisanal craft.

A Landmark Unveil: Meet aquaMORPH

Earlier this month at iDAC 2025 New Delhi, art[LAB] was officially unveiled through its signature installation piece — aquaMORPH. Thousands of designers, architects, and creators walked through a uniquely curated spatial exhibit that wasn’t just a booth — it was a sensory experience.

aquaMORPH stood as the centerpiece — a sculptural artwork that freezes the motion of liquid into a fluid, geometric wave. Designed by Sushant Verma, Co-founder of art[LAB] and rat[LAB] Studio, the piece translates algorithmic form-finding into tangible design through CNC-milled solid surface and handcrafted golden mirror inlays.

The Philosophy Behind art[LAB]: Where Code Meets Craft

At its core, art[LAB] is more than just an art studio — it’s a philosophy in motion. Founded with the vision of pushing spatial boundaries through design innovation, the studio operates at the intersection of computational design, material engineering, and artistic emotion.

Every piece is not just imagined; it’s computed, coded, tested, and refined until it reaches a state of seamless form and purpose. Yet, for all the digital prowess, the work is deeply rooted in craft. This duality is what gives art[LAB] its edge: mathematical precision meets human touch.

The studio's approach is guided by the belief that art is not static. Instead, it is a living experience, evolving with space, time, light, and interaction. That’s why art[LAB]'s installations are not just visual — they are experiential.

A Global Journey, Now Rooted in India

Although unveiled officially at IDAC 2025, art[LAB]’s journey spans over a decade with roots in international design platforms. The journey began with an art installation titled D2F: Design to Fabrication at the Mackey Center for Art and Architecture / MAC Center Museum in Los Angeles in 2014.

Since then, installations and exhibitions have spanned:

  • Los Angeles, USA

  • London, United Kingdom

  • Tokyo, Japan

  • Taipei, Taiwan

  • …and across Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai.

These global showcases have now culminated in a deeply local yet globally relevant identity in the form of art[LAB] — an Indian studio with a universal design language.

The Story of aquaMORPH: Inspired by Nature, Engineered by Design

The conceptual inspiration behind aquaMORPH came from observing the motion of water — its flow, turbulence, reflective nature, and unpredictability. The goal was to capture that liquid language and translate it into a frozen moment — a sculptural representation of motion paused in time.

Sushant Verma describes the process as one of "decoding complexity to arrive at poetic clarity." The curves of aquaMORPH weren’t drawn — they were calculated, using parametric algorithms that simulate wave patterns and fluid surfaces. These were materialized into a physical form through CNC milling, then finished with hand-applied golden mirror detailing.

"The best kind of engineering is the kind you don’t see — when code gives way to craft, and structure becomes soul."Sushant Verma, Co-founder & Artist

The Unveil Experience at iDAC

Visitors entered the art[LAB] booth by crossing a clean, minimal wall that carried an artistic prompt:

“Have you ever touched a wave frozen in motion? Come behind this wall and experience the magic.”

What followed was more than an exhibit. It was a curated spatial narrative — with ambient lighting, a singular sculptural statement, a dynamic film, and meaningful conversations with the artist himself.

Glimpses of the new art[LAB] Lookbook were also unveiled at the event, offering a sneak peek into the studio’s wide spectrum of installations across scales and spaces — from art panels and reception backdrops to sculptural dividers and temple artworks.
