Our commitment to this design philosophy was recognized at the ERA Fame Awards 2024 (Lalit Hotel, Mumbai - 14th Dec 2024), where rat[LAB] Studio’s principal designer, Ar. Sushant Verma, received an award for Best Innovative Lighting Solution for Facades. This accolade reflects our ongoing efforts to enhance façade design through innovative lighting. It underscores the importance we place on integrating light thoughtfully into our projects, improving both visual appeal and functionality.

Headfield HQ Office Facade, Noida: Geometry in Motion with Tweening Arches

At the Headfield HQ Office in Noida, light emphasizes the building's fluid geometry. The design features vertical fins that transition seamlessly into elegant arches, forming an organic structure that blends natural elements with mathematical precision. This shift from straight lines to curves demonstrates how light interacts with architecture to enhance its visual and functional potential.

Throughout the day, the vertical fins modulate sunlight, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the facade. This modulation reduces glare, maintains privacy, and improves thermal comfort, producing ever-changing patterns that foster a connection between the building and its environment. At night, integrated lighting along the arches provides a subtle yet lively glow. This accentuates the building's flowing geometry, enabling it to stand out in the urban landscape while conveying a sense of movement and elegance.

●        Inner Arches Only: Casts a soft glow to emphasize the arches' curvature, creating a serene ambiance.

●        Fins + Arch Inner: Blends lighting of fins and inner arches for a dynamic interplay of linear and curved forms.

●        Arch Side Only: Focuses on the arch sides, adding depth and dimension through light and shadow.

●        Arch Side + Arch Inner: Combines side and inner lighting for a layered, three-dimensional effect.

●        Fins Only: Highlights the vertical fins, emphasizing height and a modern aesthetic.

●        Arch Inner + Uplighters: Illuminates inner arches with uplighters for a dramatic, ground-up effect.

The Differentiated Facets facade at the Patel Nagar Office is a prime example of how innovative lighting techniques can redefine commercial architecture. The south-facing structure employs 19 angled fins that play a crucial role in managing sunlight throughout the day. These fins not only diffuse direct sunlight, creating a softer light quality that prevents harsh glare but also significantly reduce solar heat gain. This design choice contributes to cooler interior spaces, which reduces reliance on artificial cooling systems, promoting energy efficiency and sustainability.

As day transitions into night, the lighting design becomes a transformative element of the building. Hidden cove lighting integrated along the fins illuminates golden metallic strips, which glow against the evening backdrop, turning the facade into a vibrant spectacle. The interplay of light with the expanded mesh enhances this effect by diffusing the illumination further, creating a multilayered visual experience. This strategic lighting strategy results in a rhythmic play of illuminated lines along the facade, making the building a dynamic presence in the urban landscape.

Moreover, the integration of light is not limited to the building's exterior. The landscaping elements surrounding the facade are thoughtfully designed with linear stone patterns and geometric planters that echo the facade's angular geometry. Akaya One, Gurgaon: Light as Brand Identity

Akaya One exemplifies how lighting can be strategically employed as a branding tool while enhancing architectural refinement. The building features a sleek facade constructed from glass and metal, which embodies modern sophistication. A distinctive aspect of the design is the prominent “A” shape, symbolizing the brand's identity, which is seamlessly integrated into the facade.

Subtle, focused illumination outlines the "A," ensuring it stands out without overwhelming the overall aesthetic. This approach merges architectural refinement with a purposeful branding element. By night, the facade exudes understated elegance, using light to emphasize its geometry while reinforcing the brand's presence in a sophisticated and memorable way.

The Rising Waves Facade: Geometry in Motion

The Rising Waves Facade presents an innovative approach to commercial architecture. Characterized by rippling aluminum curves, this design evokes a sense of perpetual movement. It challenges the rigid facades typically associated with commercial buildings, introducing a dynamic, fluid aesthetic that makes the structure stand out.

Lighting amplifies this movement. Soft illuminations trace the curves of the facade at night, highlighting the design's rhythm and transforming the facade into a glowing, sculptural form. The use of light makes the structure appear to shift and flow with changing light conditions.

The Rising Waves Facade exemplifies how light can serve as a narrative device—turning a simple facade into a living entity that responds to light and time. By integrating dynamic lighting, the building transforms after dark, creating a lasting impression and engaging viewers in new ways.

 

    

Vision IAS, New Delhi: Iconic Elegance in Lighting

The lighting design of the Vision IAS building plays a pivotal role in accentuating its architectural features. Embedded within the facade’s curvilinear geometry, the lighting system highlights the building’s sleek lines and modern form. At night, the soft illumination gently brings out the building’s minimalistic design, casting a warm, inviting glow that enhances its presence in the city. The lighting’s subtle brilliance not only defines the building’s contours but also creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, drawing attention to its refined architectural details. This carefully designed lighting transforms the building into a striking visual landmark after dark, emphasizing its unique character and creating an iconic visual identity.

 

Amogh Shopping Complex: Motion in Light

The Amogh Shopping Complex in Rewari shows how lighting can elevate a commercial space, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The facade is minimalist, with clean lines and modern proportions that convey sophistication and simplicity.

Customizable, energy-efficient lighting brings the building to life, highlighting the proportions and shapes of the facade to emphasize its modern character. At night, the building transforms into a vibrant beacon, drawing attention to its features and creating a sense of warmth and invitation for passersby. This project illustrates how an intelligently designed facade, paired with integrated lighting, can transform a commercial space into a visual landmark, embedded in the urban fabric and providing an enhanced experience for consumers.

Folded Pleats House: Light and Volumes

The Folded Pleats House, located on the outskirts of Delhi NCR, uses natural and artificial lighting to accentuate its striking architectural volumes. Double-height spaces and strategically placed skylights allow daylight to flood into the interiors, creating dynamic light patterns that shift throughout the day.

At night, the facade's geometric elements are softly illuminated, emphasizing the play of volumes and creating a harmonious relationship between light and structure. This residential project demonstrates how light can enhance spatial perception, blending functionality with artistic expression.
